Surgery
Historically, Edgewood Animal Hospital has had a special interest in surgery. We are dedicated to building on this foundation, and providing excellent care from start to finish — from the time the surgery appointment is made, through the check in process, the actual surgical procedure, discharge instructions, and follow up visits. We have upgraded our surgical equipment to include laser and electrosurgery.
Patient safety during anesthesia and surgery is our greatest concern. We recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork to help us identify any pre-existing conditions that may interfere with our patients' ability to tolerate anesthetic drugs. We use our physical exam and labwork findings to make an anesthetic plan appropriate for each patient. Once the patient is anesthetized, a veterinary technician monitors the patient utilizing cutting edge equipment that provides minute-by-minute information on oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, heart rate and rhythm, and blood pressure.
The comfort of our patients is also of great concern. All surgical patients receive pain medications before and after their procedures to keep them as comfortable as possible. Pain medication is also dispensed for use at home following surgery. Owners of pets undergoing orthopedic procedures are instructed on how to provide physical therapy at home. Owners also receive printed home care instructions to help their pet have a speedy recovery.

Laser Surgery
The CO2 Laser produces an invisible beam of light that can be used to cut or vaporize skin and soft tissues. The advantages of using Laser are:
- Less pain—The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts so there is less post-operative pain.
- Less bleeding—The laser seals small blood vessels as it cuts so there is less bleeding during the surgery.
- Less swelling—The laser does not crush, tear, or bruise the tissue.
- Reduced risk of infection—The laser sterilizes the tissues as it cuts.
Laser is available on most surgeries for an additional charge.
